Catfish Dough Ball Bait Recipe

If you fish for food, and not just for sport, the catch of the day is important. Every fisherman knows that different baits can produce different results. Flies work well for catching trout; worms work to catch nearly any type of fish. Crickets, too, work well to catch many different types of fish. However, when it comes to cat fishing most people who fish will agree that chicken liver is perfect. Well, not quite perfect. Although the smell of chicken livers drives catfish crazy, and on a good day you can really reel them in, it can be difficult to keep the chicken liver on the hook. Sometimes you lose the liver when you cast out. Other times, small catfish nibble away at it but never get hooked. It can be frustrating to spend and spend on chicken livers then go home with next to nothing to show for it.

You can easily make a catfish bait that has that good old liver flavor, just like those big catfish love, but a bait that will actually stay on the hook. Although it will take a little while to make the bait you’ll end up with quite a large batch that will last awhile. Grind a handful of dry cat food until it is a fine powder. You can choose most any flavor of cat food, but if you get some that has a liver flavor, even better. If you have no way to grind it simply place the cat food between two pieces of waxed paper. Use a rolling pin to crush the cat food. Set the powder aside for the moment.

In the blender, place one chicken liver, then puree it until it is a liquid. Crack an egg into the blender and mix well. Pour the mixture into a bowl and sprinkle in the cat food powder. Mix this well. Begin adding flour to form a soft dough. Dump the dough onto a floured surface and add more flour, kneading it well, until you create a hard dough ball.

Take pieces of the dough and roll them between your hands to form small balls. Set the balls on plastic wrap. Wrap the balls and place them in the refrigerator. The balls can be kept for a couple of weeks there. Do not freeze the bait. When you use the special dough balls to bait your hook you’ll no longer have to worry about losing your bait on the cast.
